Disability Insurance · Calgary
Disability is the most likely claim you'll ever make. More Canadians are disabled during their working years than die. If your income stopped tomorrow due to illness or injury, how long could your family stay in your Calgary home?
Frank Says
Calgary has a large self-employed and incorporated population. Oil & gas consultants, technology professionals, contractors, healthcare practitioners. None of them have employer disability coverage. If they can't work, their income stops. Disability insurance is not optional for this population — it's the foundation.
| Feature | Employer Group Disability | Individual Disability (Frank) |
|---|---|---|
| Portability | Ends with employment | Stays with you always |
| Benefit amount | 60–66% of salary, taxable | Up to 85%, non-taxable |
| Definition of disability | Often any-occupation after 2 years | Own-occupation for life of policy |
| Benefit period | Usually 2 years or to 65 | You choose — 2yr, 5yr, or to 65 |
| Self-employed available? | No | Yes — specifically designed for it |
| Covered conditions | Employer plan terms | Including mental health, back/joint |
The most important clause in any disability policy is the definition of disability. Own-occupation means: if you can't perform your specific occupation, you qualify for benefits — even if you could theoretically do another job.
A Calgary electrician who loses the ability to work in confined spaces qualifies under an own-occupation definition. Under "any occupation," they'd need to prove they can't work at all. The difference in claim outcomes is significant.
